NY, California Push to End Food Ingredient Reporting ‘Loophole’

Democrats in New York and California are moving legislation that would preempt the federal process companies use to self-report food ingredients, spotlighting an issue that has also found a champion in Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

State lawmakers have advanced bills in both states to close what they call a loophole that allows food and beverage companies to deem their products “generally recognized as safe.” They contend the longstanding self-reporting system, overseen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allows the industry to avoid transparency and include potentially harmful additives in food.
