NY Gov. Hochul Mulls Climate Goal Delay as AI Energy Use Grows

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is eyeing changes to state climate policy to accommodate spiking demand from data centers, AI supercomputers, and cryptocurrency projects.

Tech projects have become a key part of her economic strategy for the state despite the growing likelihood New York will miss a 2030 legal deadline to power the state electrical grid with 70% renewable electricity. A report released Oct. 23 by the budget watchdog Citizens Budget Commission found the 2030 goal was out of reach given projected energy demand.
