New York could become the focus of 2025 state-level efforts to expand prohibitions on noncompete clauses in employment contracts, after federal courts blocked a national ban.
State Sen. Sean Ryan (D) said he will introduce a revamped bill by February to restrict the clauses after Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) vetoed a previous version in 2023. Ryan is also pushing legislators in adjacent states to join the campaign so workers could benefit without restrictions undermining any of the states’ attactiveness for businesses.
