New York state leaders are considering paying off the state’s unemployment insurance debt in budget negotiations despite Gov. Kathy Hochul saying Monday the proposal was dead, a spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said Wednesday.
Hochul (D) said the state would only pay the interest this year on the roughly $6.5 billion debt at a Monday press conference where she announced a $254 billion budget deal.
