Oil Industry Pushes Congress to Strike Permitting Deal By August

The energy industry is ramping up pressure on Congress to figure out a viable path forward on permitting over the next several weeks.

“A deal has to occur before the August recess,” said Mike Sommers, president and chief executive officer of the American Petroleum Institute, about an overhaul of federal permitting, which lawmakers have been working on for years. API is the largest trade association representing the natural gas and oil industry. Sommers spoke to reporters about a range of energy issues after the group’s event on US energy security on Monday.
