An organ procurement organization that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. is threatening to shut down will appear in front of House lawmakers Tuesday to defend against disturbing allegations of putting patients at risk.
Organ procurement organizations are nonprofits that coordinate procurement, preservation, and transport of organs and are legally permitted to recover organs from deceased donors, according to a Congressional Research Service report. The CRS report from February also found there were concerns over lack of consequences for underperforming organizations, none of which have ever been decertified by HHS.
