The Department of Education ceased major oversight of the companies that manage student loan borrower repayment after a year of mass purges at the agency the Trump administration has been determined to dismantle, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.
The department’s Office of Federal Student Aid stopped reviewing the accuracy of student loan servicers’ records on borrowers, and also discontinued reviews of phone calls between borrowers and the companies to ensure accurate customer service, according to the watchdog agency.
