The rate of severe US military aviation mishaps increased rapidly, and more than doubled, between 2020 and 2024, new Pentagon data provided to Sen.
There were a total of 4,820 aviation mishaps between 2000 and 2024, including 222 so-called Class A mishaps, which are considered the most serious incidents.
The data show the rate of the most serious incidents rose from 1.30 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours in 2020 to 2.02 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours in 2024—a 55% increase, said Warren (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
