Permitting Overhaul Advocates See Fresh Opportunities, Hurdles

Permitting overhaul discussions are set to resume when Congress returns next week, but industry groups and lobbyists say lawmakers must move quickly or risk another failed attempt.

Members of both parties support an overhaul of the process by which developers receive environmental approvals for projects, such as data centers, factories, and pipelines. But the unpredictability of the Trump administration, a competitive election season, and a growing list of legislative priorities could hurt negotiations. Still, proponents of permitting reform are optimistic.
