A top rail union is warning its members that a potential restructuring of Amtrak, also known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, could erode worker protections and lead to privatization of passenger rail nationwide.
Potential plans would split the quasi-public corporation into entities overseeing infrastructure, fleet and operations, but no final decisions have been made, Patrick Darcy, who chairs the Amtrak General Committee of Adjustment for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, a unit of the Teamsters, said in a Feb. 13 memo to members.
