Proxy voting and tariffs fray Republicans’ unity

Speaker Mike Johnson took a big loss this week.

What’s worse, it was avoidable. And worse than that, it came at the hands of fellow Republicans on an issue — proxy voting for new parents — that’s hardly at the top of the party’s agenda.

Republican leaders sent the House home early, scrapping the rest of the week after trying and failing to bury remote voting. They vowed to continue the fight next week against one of their own, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.).
