Republicans Float Farm Spending Estimated to Cost $59 Billion

A proposal from Republican lawmakers to raise spending on agriculture-related programs is expected to cost nearly $59 billion over 10 years, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

The increases would cover key federal farm programs, including for commodity reference prices, crop insurance, trade promotion, and animal disease response, the CBO’s preliminary calculations, obtained by Bloomberg Government, show. House Agriculture Committee members are considering the provisions in a Wednesday hearing to review bill language for the agriculture portion of a larger partisan budget measure enacting President Donald Trump’s tax and immigration policy agenda.
