Republicans skip funding fight before election

Congress’ September spending fight was more like shadowboxing. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) threw some jabs at the air, but nothing landed.

To understand why, just look at how Republicans in the most critical House races — and even many in noncompetitive districts — voted Wednesday, when they easily passed a funding bill, defused any question about a government shutdown, and cleared the way to get back to their districts.
