Congress’ top Democrats are reviewing the latest proposal to fund the Department of Homeland Security as the shutdown closes out its second week.
Spokespeople for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) confirmed they received the latest counteroffer from the White House to fund the department but didn’t elaborate on its contents.
DHS has been operating in a shutdown since Democrats balked at funding the department without changes to immigration enforcement. The two ends of Pennsylvania Avenue have been trading proposals ever since.
