Schumer Moving Ahead With Senate Stopgap Funds as House Stumbles

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, seeking to avert a government shutdown next week, is teeing off the process to move the chamber’s own stopgap funding plan without a controversial voter registration bill that has stymied the House.

“Later today, I’ll file cloture on a legislative vehicle that will enable us to prevent a Trump shutdown in the event that Speaker Johnson does not work with us in a bipartisan, bicameral manner,” Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced on the Senate floor Thursday morning. Schumer has repeatedly called for House Republicans to engage in bipartisan negotiations.
