Senate Advances Measure to Expand Social Security Benefits

The Senate advanced legislation to expand Social Security benefits for millions in a key procedural vote Wednesday, paving the way for the bipartisan measure to become law during the final days of the lame duck session.

The Senate voted, 73-27, to proceed to a final vote on the legislation (H.R. 82; BGOV Bill Analysis) that would eliminate a pair of policies — the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset — that reduces benefits for those who also receive pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security.
