Senate Blocks Stopgap Bill for 14th Time as Shutdown Ties Record

The Senate failed to advance a GOP-backed stopgap funding bill for the 14th time on Tuesday as bipartisan talks about an off-ramp happen behind the scenes.

The chamber voted 54-44 to block the House-passed stopgap (H.R. 5371), again falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed to advance. The government shutdown is tied for the longest in history as of Tuesday as lawmakers cite the possibility that they will be able to end the stalemate later this week after elections.
