Senate Democrats will be decisive in determining whether there is a government shutdown at the end of this week.
House Republicans passed in a mostly party line vote Tuesday a stopgap that would level fund agencies with some carve-outs for defense and other priorities through the end of the fiscal year, Sept. 30.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sent lawmakers home following the House vote, effectively jamming the Senate with a take-it-or-leave-it offer. If the Senate can’t pass the stopgap prior to midnight Friday, when current funding expires, the government’s likely to shut down.
