Venezuela Boat Strikes Resolution Blocked by Republican Senators

Senate Democrats failed to draw enough Republican support to block the Trump administration from conducting military strikes against suspected drug boats in the Caribbean without an explicit authorization from Congress.

Democrats forced the 48-51 floor vote Wednesday that gained some Republican support but ultimately failed to advance the war-powers resolution. The Trump administration designated drug cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations earlier this year.

The minority party is using privileged resolutions to get senators on the record for or against Trump’s executive actions, one of the few methods Democrats have to force floor votes in the GOP-controlled Senate.
