Senators failed to advance a powerful spy powers tool that expires after next week as Democrats doubled down on their demands for President Donald Trump to reverse his pick for acting national intelligence director.

The Senate voted 47-52 against moving forward on a procedural motion, threatening its prospects ahead of the June 12 deadline. Congress temporarily extended the government surveillance authorization, Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, after lawmakers previously failed to reach an agreement for a longer-term reauthorization.
