Senate Panel Advances Bipartisan Defense, Health Funding Bills

Senators advanced two of their largest annual government-funding bills in a bipartisan committee vote Thursday, touting funds for military shipbuilding and rare disease research.

The Senate Appropriations Committee advanced its fiscal 2026 Defense and Labor-HHS-Education funding bills in separate 26-3 votes. The bills, which have yet to be released publicly, typically comprise about two-thirds of federal discretionary spending. Moving the measures is a rare sign of progress in an otherwise halting series of negotiations to fund the government.

The panel traditionally votes on the bills before considering amendments and before releasing the bill text publicly later in the day.
