Senate Passes ‘Oppenheimer’ Bill Boosting Victims’ Benefits (1)

The Senate Thursday passed for the second time in less than a year a bipartisan measure to expand compensation for victims of radiation exposure resulting from the federal government’s testing of the atomic bomb in the mid-20th century.

The legislation would reauthorize the 1990 Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which expires on June 7, and also extend coverage to people in several more states and Guam who were exposed to radiation testing by the government during World War II and the Cold War. It also would extend the pool of sick uranium miners eligible to file claims.
