Senate Recesses for Week After Passing Deal to End Shutdown

Senators are headed out of town for their longest break since before the government shutdown began.

The Senate left for the rest of the week after passing a deal to reopen the government late Monday night, triggering the House to return this week. Before leaving, the Senate took a procedural step to tee up consideration of more nominees when senators return from the recess on Nov. 18.

“After six excruciating weeks, I will stop talking and let all of you get some rest,” Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said after thanking Senate staff for working without pay.
