Senate Rejects GOP Proposal to Permanently Prevent Shutdowns

Legislation aimed at avoiding government shutdowns altogether was blocked in the Senate on Monday night as the chamber barrels toward a shutdown on Wednesday.

The Senate rejected the measure (S. 2806) in a 37-61 procedural vote, failing to get enough support to overcome a filibuster. The legislation, which would reduce pressure and chip away the minority party’s leverage in negotiating over the must-pass Sept. 30 deadline, automatically extends federal funding at existing levels if Congress hasn’t enacted appropriations legislation by the start of a new fiscal year.
