Senator Bucking Nvidia Opposition Tightens AI Chip Export Bill

New changes to a high-profile bill seek to limit exports of advanced artificial intelligence chips from US companies like Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to arms-embargoed countries, including China.

There’s “nothing that alters it or the intent of it, but we’ve made it stronger in a lot of ways,” Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), the measure’s lead co-sponsor, said in a hallway interview on Capitol Hill Thursday.

The closely watched legislation would require AI chip sellers to ensure US companies get priority access to their products before selling to China and other arms-embargoed countries, such as Russia and Iran. ...
