Senators Eye Member Security Changes in Congress’ Funding Bill

Senate appropriators plan to add security measures for members of Congress in their fiscal 2026 Legislative Branch spending bill advanced Thursday in the wake of increased politically motivated attacks against lawmakers.

The Senate Appropriations Committee advanced the draft bill 26-1. The measure would provide a total of $7.1 billion for Congress and related agencies, according to Legislative Branch Subcommittee Chairman Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.).

The bill would boost funding for the Capitol Police, proposing $855.1 million for the department, but senators plan to add additional security provisions to the bill in the future.
