Shortages at Federal Nutrition Programs Spur Lawmaker Scrutiny

Supply chain bottlenecks at two key Agriculture Department nutrition programs are jeopardizing access to food for as many as 719,000 senior citizens and 55,000 vulnerable tribal members, lawmakers are warning the Biden administration.

Delivery delays at the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program for seniors have reduced food security for tribal and senior households and hit operators of the programs, Senate lawmakers said in a missive sent late Tuesday. The letter followed similar concerns raised last week by House lawmakers and a separate, bipartisan group of Senators.
