Shutdown Beats Unflattering Record as Feds Hurt From Missed Pay

The country is now in its longest government shutdown, beating a 34-day record set during the first Trump administration.

The funding lapse has gone on for 35 full days and counting as the House remains out of session and Democrats continue to block a clean continuing resolution in the Senate.

Democratic senators huddled for hours Tuesday and indicated they’re inching closer to a resolution, but a deal remains elusive. It’s possible Democrats’ resounding wins in off-year elections last night could inspire them to dig in further against Republicans’ spending proposal.
