Several powerful committee jobs could and will be up for grabs in the new Congress with a slate of policymaking heavyweights retiring or facing possible defeat on Tuesday.
Many of the contests have been underway for months, but those will hit a fever pitch when Congress returns from elections Nov. 12. Party caucuses are expected to make most of those selections before the post-election lame duck session ends in December, although subcommittee slots might not be settled until the new year.
