Sling TV’s California Privacy Case Scrutinizes Cookie Blocking

Companies should reexamine how they handle and communicate consumer requests to block tracking cookies and other data-sharing practices following California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s settlement with Sling TV for violating state privacy law, attorneys said.

Bonta on Oct. 30 announced a $530,000 fine against the internet-based TV provider for its “confusing” and “hard to find” opt-out process for data sharing. His office focused on Sling TV’s use of cookies, the ubiquitous files that allow websites to track personal details such as web activity and online behavior.
