A South Carolina Senate vote to fast-track debate about redistricting before the 2026 midterm elections failed 25-15 on Friday, complicating Republicans’ effort to enact a new map that would favor the party in all 7 House districts before early voting begins next week.

Republicans needed a two-thirds majority to suspend Senate rules and invoke cloture early on the bill, which targets Democrats’ lone US House seat by weakening Rep. Jim Clyburn’s district.
