House Speaker Mike Johnson told Senate Republicans on Wednesday he wants Congress to pass a stopgap spending bill this month that would extend into early next year in hopes of avoiding a government shutdown this fall and automatic spending cuts next year.
Johnson pitched a plan to continue government funding through January 15 to give the House time to finish its 12 appropriations bills, according to a number of lawmakers who participated in the Louisiana lawmaker’s first meeting with Senate Republicans since he became the House leader last month.
