Speaker Johnson Rebuffs Talk of Breaking Up Homeland Funding

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) hardened his stance against partially funding the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, saying he does not think “we need to be breaking it apart” as bipartisan conversations continue in the Senate.

Senate Republican leaders have warmed to funding most of DHS except some immigration accounts to help garner some Democratic votes, though it’s still unclear if the Senate can pass such a bill. If it does, House GOP leaders’ blessing will almost certainly be needed to get funding legislation to President Donald Trump’s desk.
