Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik is dropping out of the New York governor race and won’t seek reelection to her Northern district, she announced in an X post Friday.

Stefanik’s announcement, which follows just over a month of intense campaigning to succeed Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, opens the Republican field for the governorship and raises questions about what’s next for Stefanik, a top ally of President Donald Trump.
