Rep. Elise Stefanik would vacate her House seat and trigger a special election if the New York Republican is confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s US ambassador to the United Nations.
Stefanik, a vocal Trump backer who leads the House Republican Conference, was just overwhelmingly re-elected to a sixth term in New York’s 21st District, a Republican bastion in the northeastern part of the state. Her departure would temporarily shrink what will almost certainly be a slender House Republican majority in the 119th Congress. The ambassador position requires Senate confirmation.
