Taiwan Envoy Rejects ‘Freeloader’ Tag as US Urges Defense Boost

Taiwan’s top envoy to Washington said the island democracy isn’t freeloading off the US for its defense against China and that it’s taking collaborative steps to bolster its security.

“We’re not freeloaders, free-riders — we’re not just expecting to be saved,” Taiwan’s de facto ambassador Alexander Tah-Ray Yui said in an interview Wednesday in Washington. “Peace Through Strength is something we embrace,” he added, citing one of Trump’s favorite foreign policy taglines.

Yui said Taiwan is in constant discussions with US officials about which American-made weapons it can buy that are best-suited to “asymmetric” warfare against a bigger foe. ...
