Taiwan hired a lobbying firm with ties to the Trump administration on the cusp of President Donald Trump’s trip to China, where the island quickly became a flashpoint in this week’s high-stakes summit.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States retained Checkmate Government Relations, a fast-growing K Street shop with connections in the executive branch and to US lawmakers, Justice Department filings from this week show.
