Tariffs Threaten US Agriculture, Canada Farm Minister Warns

Canada’s minister of agriculture and agri-food warned state and federal policymakers Tuesday that changes to trade relations with the US proposed by the Trump administration would cause serious harm to both nations’ farm sectors.

Any disruption, “including tariffs, would be devastating to both of our countries—it is in our interest to avoid that,” said Lawrence MacAulay at an event in Washington.

His message comes a day after President Donald Trump recommitted to levying 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico as soon as next week. MacAulay sounded the note of caution during a speech at the National Association of State Departments ...
