Texas Republicans unveiled their first proposal for a revamped congressional map after President Donald Trump called on state lawmakers to deliver as many as five new GOP seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The unusual mid-decade restructuring targets Democratic seats around Houston, Dallas and Central Texas, said Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University. That sets up a showdown in the state legislature, with Democrats threatening to flee Texas in a bid to force legislative activity to a standstill.
