About 2,200 registered nurses walked off the job at the University of Chicago Medical Center Sept. 20 in the first nurses strike at the center.

Nurses represented by National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United called for the one-day work stoppage after talks broke down and a federal mediator failed to make headway. Striking nurses won’t return to work until Sept. 25 because the medical center contractually agreed to employ hundreds of replacement health professionals for a minimum of five days.
