Thune Eschews Filibuster Changes Sought by GOP Hardliners (1)

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) declined to commit to a procedural change that House Republican hardliners demanded on voting legislation in exchange for their support of a spending bill.

Thune warned that using a so-called standing filibuster, which would require Democrats to continuously speak on the Senate floor to delay consideration of a bill, could have unintended consequences.

“There are a lot of implications and ramifications that I think our conference need to have a conversation about,” Thune told reporters Tuesday morning, adding the move could tie up the Senate floor “indefinitely.”
