Thune Rebuffs Trump’s Push to Link DHS Funding, Voter ID Passage

Senate Majority Leader John Thune pushed back on President Donald Trump‘s demand to link funding for the Department of Homeland Security to passage of Republicans’ voter ID legislation, calling the plan “not realistic.”

Trump urged lawmakers to tie the two issues together, saying Monday he doesn’t want a deal to reopen DHS if it doesn’t also include passage of the SAVE America Act, the GOP voting legislation he’s made his top legislative priority. Trump pushed back on the potential of a DHS funding deal after talks between Republicans and Democrats ramped up last week.
