Top AI Lawmaker Teases Sweeping Bill on Federal-State Guardrails

A leading House lawmaker on artificial intelligence policy unveiled his plans for comprehensive legislation that would draw lines between state and federal regulatory action, addressing a hotly debated issue that’s roiled the industry.

Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.), co-chair of the congressional AI caucus, said his forthcoming measure will include guidance on preemption to ensure states are staying within their constitutional authority when regulating AI. The bill will also include some guardrails and promote US leadership in AI standards and research and development.
