Torres Won’t Run for NY Governor if Socialist Elected NYC Mayor

Count New York Rep. Ritchie Torres out of the 2026 race for governor if he’d have to deal with a socialist mayor of the nation’s largest city.

“If Zohran Mamdani becomes the mayor of New York, that will so revolutionize the political landscape that I am unlikely to run for governor under those circumstances,” Torres (D) said Friday in a roundtable interview with Bloomberg Government, speaking about the democratic socialist candidate from Queens who is rising in the polls ahead of the June 24 mayoral primary.
