Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) approved a new congressional map Thursday, shortly after legislators passed a redistricting plan aimed at helping Republicans win all nine of the state’s US House seats.
Republican lawmakers, urged on President Donald Trump, rushed the new map through the state capitol this week during a raucous special session that saw Democrats joining protests against the move. Opponents argued the new map will dilute the power of Black voters by splitting the only Democrat-held congressional seat, centered around Memphis, into three separate districts.
