President Donald Trump’s pick to oversee US border security operations pledged responsible spending as Congress prepares to send his agency an unprecedented multibillion-dollar boost to carry out Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The Senate Finance Committee held its nomination hearing Wednesday for Rodney Scott to lead Customs and Border Protection. Scott, who helmed the US Border Patrol during the first Trump administration before being pushed out of the job early in the Biden administration, faced pointed questions about his past actions and future strategy at a time when the GOP is dramatically reshaping border enforcement and trade.
