President Donald Trump’s budget chief Russell Vought hits Capitol Hill today to try to convince Congress to reverse billions in spending lawmakers already approved.
Vought will meet behind closed doors with skeptical Senate Republicans to sell them on the Trump administration’s clawback proposal.
Getting backing from lawmakers for the cuts would be another step toward Trump’s goal of remaking the federal government. Failing to win support would show there are limits to the president’s clout.
It could also embolden Democrats who have argued that slashing the federal bureaucracy doesn’t have wide political support outside of conservative circles.
