Trump Commerce Pick Howard Lutnick Moves Closer to Confirmation

A Senate panel Wednesday advanced President Donald Trump’s pick to run the Commerce Department, Wall Street executive Howard Lutnick, paving the way for his confirmation.

The Senate Commerce Committee approved Lutnick’s nomination mainly along party lines in a 16-12 vote. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) was the lone Democrat to support Lutnick.

Senate Republicans are poised to confirm Lutnick in the coming days. Once confirmed, Lutnick will be tasked with leading Trump’s trade agenda, which disrupted global markets this week after the administration imposed tariffs on China and threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico.
