President Donald Trump has proposed to reduce federal funding for the Commerce Department for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1, according to his so-called skinny budget request sent to House appropriators on Friday.
The sprawling agency includes 13 bureaus that help manage international trade, the US census, weather forecasting, telecommunications and technology policy, among other areas. Trump has requested $8.5 billion for the department for fiscal 2026, which represents a proposed $1.7 billion—or 16.5%—year-on-year decrease from the current level.
