Top lawmakers pushed back on a proposal by President Donald Trump to fund the government with a stopgap measure through Jan. 31, which is longer than congressional negotiators initially discussed.

The fight over the length of a continuing resolution increases the risk of an Oct. 1 shutdown, as Congress and the White House feud over basic aspects of a funding bill just three weeks before the deadline.
